The touchscreen MacBook Pro is expected Wednesday and could cost up to $500 more. An OLED MacBook Air is not close.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Apple shows 14- and 16-inch OLED touchscreen MacBook Pros on October 28, with a touch-aware macOS. OLED MacBook Air and iMac models are still in testing, and the next Air, due early 2027, keeps an LCD.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in his Power On newsletter on October 25 that Apple will unveil 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with touch-enabled OLED displays on Wednesday, October 28, at its “Pro and tell” event in Los Angeles. In the same newsletter he said OLED versions of the MacBook Air and iMac are still in testing and “remain some way off.” Apple has confirmed only the date. Everything else here is reporting.

What changed since the invitation

The October 20 preview covered the expected lineup. Gurman’s new report adds three things a buyer can use.

  • Price. Gurman says the OLED models will cost more. Today’s mini-LED MacBook Pros with M5 Pro and M5 Max start at $2,499 for the 14-inch and $2,999 for the 16-inch, and MacRumors reports the new ones could run up to $500 higher.
  • How touch works. Gurman describes a “dynamic interface” in macOS. Controls change size depending on whether you last touched the screen or used the trackpad, tapping a button can open a menu around your finger, and the Dock and menu bar are tuned for touch. Apple will pitch touch as one more input next to the keyboard and trackpad.
  • What stays. The mini-LED MacBook Pros stay on sale for now, according to Gurman, and will be discontinued later.

The hardware details match earlier reports: the same M5 Pro and M5 Max chips Apple shipped in March, a lighter body, and a Dynamic Island where the notch is today. An M6 iMac is also expected this week.

Confirmed vs. reported

Confirmed by Apple: the October 28 event in Los Angeles. Reported by Bloomberg and not confirmed: the touch models, their chips, the macOS changes, the price increase, the OLED Air and iMac testing, and an LCD MacBook Air refresh in early 2027. Apple posts its announcements by press release on Wednesday morning, so the reported parts settle in two days.

What it means if you buy laptops for a team

The touch screen is a $500 question per seat, if the reported ceiling holds. For a team of 10 that’s $5,000 more for the same M5 Pro or M5 Max chip. The chip is where the speed comes from, so a team that lives in Slack, Zoom, a browser and a code editor gets the same performance from either model. Pay the premium for the people who will use touch or need the lighter body. Buy the mini-LED model for everyone else, and expect it to get cheaper at retailers once the OLED version ships.

If you were holding out for an OLED MacBook Air, stop waiting. Gurman says the next Air, due in early 2027, still uses an LCD, and he gave no date for an OLED one. Buy the Air you need now.

Most of these laptops will spend the workday plugged into an external display, which makes the lid screen matter less.
