About ten iPhone Duo owners report the inner screen cracking along the hinge within days of launch, some during setup. iFixit's teardown suggests a hinge support bar may press on the display. Apple hasn't commented. Buy from Apple, not a carrier, and keep the receipt.
The iPhone Duo went on sale Friday, October 23. By Sunday, a small group of owners reported the same failure: the inner folding screen cracks down the middle of the hinge, and a horizontal band of pixels stays stuck glowing white.
9to5Mac counted about ten separate cases on the r/iPhoneDuo subreddit as of October 25. Some phones failed hours after unboxing. A couple failed during setup. Apple has likely shipped hundreds of thousands of units, so ten reports don’t make a widespread defect. They are worth knowing about before you buy.
What is confirmed and what isn’t
Confirmed:
- Owners have posted photos of matching cracks along the fold, with a stuck white band of pixels, per 9to5Mac.
- iFixit’s teardown, published October 25, found the reported damage sits just below where the display cable passes the central hinge support. Several hinge edges meet at that spot.
- Apple has not commented and has not published guidance on how to fold or unfold the phone.
Not confirmed:
- The cause. iFixit’s leading theory, built from CT scans, teardown footage and Apple’s patents, is that the center support bar may not drop far enough when the phone closes. The curved fold then presses on it and creates a stress point. iFixit says the teardown does not prove the cause.
- A bad batch. Commenters on 9to5Mac and Reddit suggest a batch with a misaligned hinge part. Nobody has shown evidence for it yet.
- Pressing the screen when you close it. Some users blame pressure on the center of the inner display. 9to5Mac says it’s unclear whether that matters.
What it costs if yours cracks
Apple’s US list price for an inner screen repair is $999 outside warranty and without AppleCare+, half the $1,999 starting price (our price and repair piece). With AppleCare+ the repair is $99. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss costs $19.99 a month, $199.99 a year or $399 once.
A crack in the first days should fall under the standard warranty, and that’s how Apple Stores have handled it so far. 9to5Mac reports most owners who went to an Apple Store got a replacement phone on the spot. Carrier customers did worse: carriers lacked spare stock, and one store told an owner the crack came from a drop and the repair would be paid.
iFixit’s other findings
- Repair score: a provisional 5 out of 10, iFixit’s highest yet for a foldable. It stays provisional until replacement parts are on sale. The inner display and hinge cost the most points.
- Batteries: two cells, 11.567 Wh and 7.506 Wh, for 19.073 Wh total. Both use electrically releasable adhesive, which iFixit called the easiest battery removal it has seen in a foldable.
- Dust: after iFixit’s dust test the hinge crunched, though less dust got in than on other foldables it has tested. Keep sand and grit away from the hinge.
What it means if you’re buying one for work
Buy from Apple. The owners who got same-day swaps bought at Apple Stores. If you buy through a carrier, you are relying on the carrier’s stock and its call on whether a crack is drop damage.
Check the hinge on day one. Open and close the phone several times during setup, before you move your data. If you hear a crunch or see a line at the fold, return it inside Apple’s 14-day return window instead of waiting.
Buy AppleCare+ anyway. The $399 one-time plan turns a $999 inner screen repair into $99. That was true before these reports, and about ten cracked screens in three days make it easier to justify.
Wait two weeks if you can. If the Duo is a nice-to-have, give Apple time to respond and see whether the reports grow. If you need the bigger screen now, the EU label numbers still hold: battery life matches the iPhone 18 Pro and repairs cost more.
