If your iPhone Duo's inner screen cracked at the fold, contact AppleCare for a replacement. Apple confirmed the issue on October 26, AppleCare+ is not required, and carrier buyers are covered too. Drop damage is different: $999, or $99 with AppleCare+.

If your iPhone Duo’s inner screen cracked along the fold, or shows a stuck white line across the middle, contact AppleCare and ask for a replacement. Apple confirmed the problem on Monday, October 26. You don’t need AppleCare+, and you go to AppleCare even if you bought the phone from a carrier.

This page covers what to do step by step, what Apple has and hasn’t said, and what a repair costs when the damage is your fault. Apple is the source for every price here. We have not tested an iPhone Duo.

The short answer

Your situation What to do What it costs
Inner screen cracked at the fold with no drop, or a white line appeared Contact AppleCare for a replacement Apple gave no price; AppleCare+ is not required
Bought from a carrier Contact AppleCare directly Same as above
Inside Apple’s 14-day return window and you no longer want it Return it to Apple Full refund under Apple’s return policy
Dropped it and the inner screen broke, with AppleCare+ Book an AppleCare+ repair $99
Dropped it and the inner screen broke, no AppleCare+ Book an out-of-warranty repair $999
Outer screen broke Book a screen repair $379, or $29 with AppleCare+

What the failure looks like

The reports since launch on October 23 describe the same thing: the 7.6-inch inner screen cracks down the center line of the hinge, and a horizontal band of pixels stays stuck white. Some owners say it happened within hours of unboxing. A couple said it happened during setup. One owner told Android Authority they heard a crack after fewer than 20 unfolds, and Apple replaced the phone right away.

Not every photo online is real. 9to5Mac and Notebookcheck both say a handful of the posts are fake, AI-generated images. If you’re judging the risk from Reddit and X, count the reports with a named owner and a store visit.

What Apple has said

Apple’s statement, given to 9to5Mac and Bloomberg on October 26:

  • “We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units.”
  • “If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.”

9to5Mac added three details from Apple: AppleCare+ is not required, carrier buyers should contact AppleCare directly, and most units are not affected.

What Apple has not said: how many phones are affected, what causes it, whether phones built now are different, and whether there will be a formal service program. There is no recall. Apple’s remedy is a replacement through AppleCare, one phone at a time.

Step by step

  1. Stop folding it. Leave the phone open or closed and use the outer screen until Apple has seen it.
  2. Take photos. Shoot the crack and the white line with the phone open, in good light. Note the date it appeared and roughly how many times you had opened it.
  3. Check the outside. Apple’s statement covers a defect, and a repair for accidental damage is billed. Note any dents or scuffs on the frame and hinge before the appointment, so you know what the technician will see.
  4. Back up. Run an iCloud or Mac backup before you hand it over. A replacement phone comes back empty.
  5. Contact AppleCare. Use the Apple Support app, support.apple.com or an Apple Store Genius Bar appointment. Say the inner display cracked at the hinge without a drop, and that Apple’s October 26 statement says to contact AppleCare for a replacement.
  6. Bring the receipt. Carrier buyers especially. Before Apple spoke, one carrier store called a crack drop damage and quoted a paid repair, per our October 25 report. Apple’s statement now covers you, but the receipt proves the purchase date.
  7. Inside 14 days? You can still return the phone to Apple for a refund if you’d rather wait for the next batch.

What a repair costs if it’s on you

Apple’s statement covers a defect. Accidental damage such as a drop is billed at Apple’s US repair prices, which Apple published on October 14.

Repair Without AppleCare+ With AppleCare+
Inner folding screen $999 $99
Outer screen $379 $29
Cover layer on the folding screen $49 Not published

These are Apple’s estimates; the final price depends on Apple’s inspection. Every other line is in the full list. The inner screen alone costs half the phone’s $1,999 starting price. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss costs $399 once, $199.99 a year or $19.99 a month. On this phone, one inner screen repair pays for the plan more than twice over.

What might cause it

Apple hasn’t named a cause. iFixit’s teardown, published October 25, found that the reported cracks sit just below where the display cable passes the hinge’s central support bar. It suggests the curved screen may come too close to that bar and create a stress point. iFixit says it hasn’t proven that. It gave the Duo a provisional repair score of 5 out of 10.

Other early durability tests point both ways. Android Authority reports that a JerryRigEverything bend test left permanent green lines on the inner screen, and that a separate fold test found the hinge held up over thousands of folds while the crease got deeper.

Should you still buy one?

If you need it for work now: buy from Apple, add AppleCare+, and open and close the phone several times on day one before you move your data. If a line appears at the fold, return it inside the 14 days. New orders ship in late January, which gives Apple three months to find the cause before most buyers get theirs.

If it’s a nice-to-have: wait for Apple to name a cause or a production change. We’ll update this page when it does. Battery life and repair scores are in our EU label report.

FAQ

Is there an iPhone Duo recall?

No. As of October 27, Apple has not issued a recall or a formal service program. It says owners with inner display problems should contact AppleCare for a replacement.

Does Apple replace a cracked iPhone Duo screen for free?

Apple says affected owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement and that AppleCare+ is not required. It did not publish a price for that replacement. Accidental damage is different: an inner screen repair costs $999 without AppleCare+ and $99 with it.

I bought my iPhone Duo from Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile. Where do I go?

Contact AppleCare directly. Apple told 9to5Mac that carrier buyers should go straight to AppleCare.

How much does it cost to replace an iPhone Duo inner screen?

Apple’s US price for an inner folding screen repair is $999 out of warranty without AppleCare+, and $99 with AppleCare+. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss costs $399 once.

How many iPhone Duo screens have cracked?

Nobody outside Apple knows. Apple says “a small number.” 9to5Mac counted about ten separate cases on Reddit by October 25, and some images posted online are fake.

What causes the iPhone Duo screen to crack?

Apple hasn’t said. iFixit’s teardown points at the hinge’s center support bar, where the display cable passes, as a likely stress point, but it hasn’t proven it.
