On October 26 Apple told 9to5Mac it is aware of an issue with the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units and that affected owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement. AppleCare+ is not required. Apple gave no cause and no count.
Apple has confirmed the iPhone Duo screen problem. On Monday, October 26, it told 9to5Mac: “We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units.” Owners who see it should contact AppleCare for a replacement. The phone went on sale three days earlier, on October 23.
The failure is the one we reported on Sunday: the inner folding screen cracks down the middle of the hinge, and a band of pixels stays stuck white.
Confirmed vs. not confirmed
Confirmed by Apple, per 9to5Mac:
- Apple knows about an issue with the inner display on “a small number” of iPhone Duo units.
- The fix is a replacement through AppleCare. You don’t need an AppleCare+ plan to get it.
- If you bought the phone from a carrier, contact AppleCare directly.
Not confirmed:
- How many phones. Apple did not give a number. Notebookcheck notes that some reports posted online turned out to be fake.
- The cause. Apple did not name one. iFixit’s teardown suggests the hinge’s center support bar may not drop far enough when the phone closes and presses on the display. iFixit says it has not proven that.
- A production change. Apple has not said whether phones shipping now are built differently.
What it costs
Apple did not put a price on the replacement. It did say AppleCare+ is not required. Every new iPhone carries Apple’s one-year limited warranty, which covers defects. Out of warranty and without AppleCare+, Apple’s US list price for an inner screen repair is $999, half the phone’s $1,999 starting price (every Duo price and repair cost). With AppleCare+ it’s $99.
What it means
If your Duo’s inner screen cracks at the fold, go straight to AppleCare. Before Apple’s statement, carrier customers had the hardest time: one store called a crack drop damage and quoted a paid repair. Apple’s statement now gives you something to point to. Bring the receipt.
If you’re about to buy one for work, Sunday’s advice holds with one change. Buying from Apple still gets you the simplest path. Carrier buyers are now covered too, through AppleCare. Open and close the phone several times on day one, before you move your data, and return it inside the 14-day window if you see a line at the fold. Apple’s statement covers a defect. It does not cover a drop, so the $399 one-time AppleCare+ plan is still worth buying on a $1,999 phone with a $999 screen.
If the Duo is a nice-to-have, there is no rush. New orders don’t ship until late January, and by then Apple will have had three months to find the cause. Battery life and repair scores from the EU energy label still apply.
