Apple turned on retention messages for auto-renewable App Store subscriptions on November 4. Developers can show text, images or a special offer inside the cancellation flow, set who sees it in App Store Connect, and pick the message per subscriber through the Retention Messaging API, which is available by request.
If your app sells an App Store subscription, you can now make one last pitch before a subscriber cancels. Apple announced on November 4 that retention messages are available for auto-renewable subscriptions. They appear inside the cancellation flow and can include text, images or a special offer.
What Apple turned on
Apple describes retention messages as a reminder of your subscription’s value while a subscriber decides whether to cancel. The setup has two layers:
- App Store Connect. You configure messages for each auto-renewable subscription, including which subscribers are eligible and how long to wait between messages. Apple’s setup guide covers the steps.
- Retention Messaging API. The API lets your server pick which message each subscriber sees, based on their subscription details. Access is available by request.
9to5Mac reports a limit of up to 10 retention messages per app, each tied to one or more subscriptions. It says Apple first showed the feature at WWDC 2026, in session 309. It also draws the line with Win-Back Offers, which Apple added in 2024: those target people after they cancel or lapse, while retention messages reach subscribers before the cancellation is complete.
Apple’s announcement doesn’t list every offer type or say how often one subscriber can see a message. The help article and API docs are where those rules live.
Your cancel screen is now a second paywall
For a founder with a subscription app, this is the first time Apple has let you speak inside its own cancel flow. Until now, that screen belonged to Apple, and your only shot came after the subscriber had already left. Our recommendations:
- Start with one message, no discount. Remind people what they’d lose: saved projects, history, team seats. A discount trains users to cancel for a coupon, so save it for the API stage, where you can target it.
- Request API access now. It isn’t automatic. Targeting by plan, tenure or usage is where retention messages will earn more than a blanket offer.
- Measure saves against later churn. A subscriber kept with a three-month discount who leaves in month four is a delayed cancel. Track the cohort.
- Line it up with Win-Back Offers. Use retention messages before the cancel and Win-Back after it, with different offers so a user can’t stack them.
If you’re shipping an update anyway, budget time for Apple’s other two changes this month: new age rating declarations for dating features and AI companions, and Siri AI support through App Intents in the iOS 27.3 beta.
For subscribers, expect to see a message or an offer the next time you cancel an App Store subscription in Settings. Cancel anyway if the offer doesn’t change your answer.
