OpenAI doubled the Work and Codex allowances on its $100 Pro 100 and $500 Pro 500 plans on October 29 and dropped the planned usage cut for $200 Pro 200 subscribers. Prices did not change. Next, OpenAI plans to fold Work into regular Chat and draw ChatGPT and Codex from one shared allowance.
If you pay for ChatGPT Pro, you have more Work and Codex usage this week at the same price, and you don’t need to do anything to get it. OpenAI doubled the allowances on Pro 100 and Pro 500 on October 29, canceled the cut it had planned for Pro 200, and applied the change to existing subscribers automatically. Plus is unchanged.
What changed on October 29
OpenAI sells three Pro tiers in the US: Pro 100 at $100 a month, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500. Per OpenAI’s Pro tiers help page, as quoted by MIXED:
- Pro 100: the Work and Codex allowance doubled. Weekly GPT-6 Pro message limits did not change.
- Pro 200: the reduction OpenAI emailed subscribers about on September 29 “is canceled.” Subscribers already on the higher allowance keep it, and those on the lower one move up to match.
- Pro 500: the Work and Codex allowance doubled. It keeps the Ultrafast tier, which Pro 200 does not get.
- Plus: no change.
OpenAI’s Tibo, who fronts ChatGPT and Codex on X, announced it the same day: “We are doubling all usage limits for all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium, effective today,” according to BleepingComputer. OpenAI has not published numeric limits for any tier, so “double” is relative to an allowance it never stated in numbers.
What comes next: one allowance for ChatGPT and Codex
In an email to subscribers reported by BleepingComputer on November 1, OpenAI said it will test a combined Chat and Work experience with a small group “in the coming weeks.” In that test, you can bring files and plugins into a normal chat and ask ChatGPT to build a site or a presentation, or act on the web, without switching modes. Codex stays its own experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.
The bigger change is billing logic. ChatGPT and Codex will draw from the same allowance. Unlimited Instant stays outside it. Heavier models and longer tasks burn more of the shared pool. You will see what’s left, and when it resets, under Settings > Usage. When it runs out, you wait, upgrade or buy credits. OpenAI has not given a date beyond “the coming weeks.”
Pro 200 holdouts can stay put
The September cut pushed some Pro 200 subscribers to weigh Pro 500 or a rival plan. That pressure is gone for now: same price, same or higher allowance. The open question is the shared pool. If your team runs long Codex jobs and leans on ChatGPT for research on the same seat, the two will compete for one budget once it ships. Check Settings > Usage for a week after the change lands before you upgrade or add seats.
Anthropic moved the same way last week: its $200 plan, now called Ultra, drops the 5-hour limit for verified accounts. Both companies are competing on included usage for heavy users at flat prices. For price per token on the API side, see OpenAI’s GPT-6.1 Terra price cut.
