Which Apple Watch to buy in 2026: SE 3, Series 12 or Ultra 4?

Buy the $449 Series 12 in 46mm. It's thin enough to sleep in and has Apple's new heart sensor. The $249 SE 3 covers Apple Pay and Mac unlock. Pay for an Ultra only for two-day battery.

Buy the Apple Watch Series 12, $449 for the 46mm aluminum model. It’s thin enough to wear to bed, it gets Apple’s new heart sensor and chip, and a 15-minute charge covers a full workday.

Buy the $249 SE 3 if you only want Apple Pay, notifications and a faster way to unlock your Mac. Pay for an Ultra only if you need two days between charges. I’ve worn a used first-generation Ultra every day for 10 months, and battery and bedtime are where it lets me down.

How I picked

My Apple Watch Ultra (1st gen) review covers 10 months of all-day wear: calls, Apple Pay, the stopwatch, heart rate checks and unlocking my MacBook. Before that I wore an original Apple Watch SE. I haven’t worn the 2026 models. For those, I compared Apple’s spec pages with four September 2026 videos: Max Tech’s buyer’s guide and its follow-up comparing the Series 12, Ultra 4 and SE 3, Brandon Butch’s Series 12 unboxing and comparison with the Series 11, and Marques Brownlee’s take on this year’s updates. Prices are US prices in October 2026.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 $799 50 hours 12 mm Yes Two-day battery, satellite
Apple Watch Ultra 3 $599–$649 on sale 42 hours 12 mm Yes An Ultra for less
Apple Watch Ultra (1st gen), used $250–$325 36 hours 14.4 mm No The look, if software doesn’t matter

Best for most people: Series 12, $449

Three things make the Series 12 the one to buy this year.

It’s the watch you’ll keep on at night. At 9.7 mm, it’s the thinnest of the three new models. My Ultra is a big watch, and some nights it gets in the way in bed. Max Tech’s reviewer had the same problem: he moved from an Ultra 3 to a Series 12 and said he’d use the thinner watch for sleep tracking. If you want sleep and recovery data, the watch has to stay on overnight.

The heart sensor is new. Apple redesigned the sensors with larger, more efficient LEDs. Butch and Brownlee both report background heart rate every 5 seconds, against every 5 minutes before, without a hit to battery life. That data feeds the new readiness score in Apple’s Health app, which tells you whether to push or rest. Butch notes it needs several nights of wear before it gives you a score.

Charging fits a long day. Apple rates it at 24 hours. Butch says 15 minutes on the charger now gives up to 12 hours of use, up from 8 on the Series 11. I already top up my Ultra twice a day, during a shower and again before bed. On a Series 12, the shower charge alone would carry the rest of my day.

Get the 46mm unless you have small wrists. Butch, with a 6.6-inch wrist, thought the 42mm looked too small. Skip the $699 titanium and $899 ceramic versions unless you want the materials. The sensors and chip are the same.

The cheaper option: SE 3, $249

Most of what I use my watch for every day works on any current Apple Watch: Apple Pay, the stopwatch, notifications and unlocking my Mac. If that’s your list, the SE 3 does it for $200 less than the Series 12, and it runs watchOS 27, including Siri AI.

The trade-offs are real. Battery is rated at 18 hours, so it needs a charge every day. The display is dimmer, at 1,000 nits against 2,000 on the Series 12, with thicker bezels. Max Tech points out it has no ECG and no hypertension alerts, and the reviewer’s unit picked up scratches on its Ion-X glass. If you want health data you’ll act on, spend the extra $200.

When an Ultra is worth it: Ultra 4 or a discounted Ultra 3

The case for the Ultra is battery. Apple rates the Ultra 4 at 50 hours, or 84 in Low Power Mode. That covers a red-eye flight and the full day after it without a charger. It also adds satellite messaging, Find My and Emergency SOS when you’re off the grid, a 3,000-nit display and a siren.

For most business travel, you’re never off the grid. You’re in airports and hotels with outlets everywhere. The Ultra’s size is a cost every night, and I feel it. Max Tech flags its 12 mm case as a poor fit for sleep tracking.

If you want one anyway, look at the Ultra 3 first. Retailers are clearing them after the Ultra 4 launch, at $599 to $649. It’s rated at 42 hours, has satellite SOS and runs watchOS 27. Apple’s refurbished Ultra 2 costs $509, so at today’s prices the Ultra 3 is the better buy.

What about a used first-generation Ultra?

That’s the watch on my wrist. Used prices run $250 to $325, about the same as a new SE 3. It still looks great, and nothing I use daily stopped working.

But Apple left it off watchOS 27. It won’t get Siri AI, the new tap gesture or the new Health features, and its sleep tracking gets my nights wrong in both directions. At the same price, the SE 3 gives you current software and a warranty. Buy the old Ultra only if you want the look and don’t care about updates. My full review has the details.

Two new features worth knowing about for work

The Series 12 and Ultra 4 get Apple’s new audio features, which Apple says arrive later this year. Live Rewind shows a transcript of the last 15 seconds of audio when you double-tap the Digital Crown. Brownlee describes Siri Recap, which turns conversations into notes, titles and key points. It’s opt-in and launches in beta. If you spend your day in meetings, these are the first watch features in years that could change how you work. They aren’t shipping yet, so don’t buy a watch on the promise.

My recommendation

Buy the Series 12 in 46mm aluminum for $449. Add cellular for $100 only if you’ll leave your phone behind. If you just want payments and alerts, the $249 SE 3 is enough. Buy an Ultra only for two-day battery, and get the Ultra 3 on sale before paying $799 for the Ultra 4. If sleep tracking is your main reason to buy, my sleep tracker guide explains why a ring may suit you better than any watch.

FAQ

Is the Series 12 worth upgrading to from a Series 11?

Only for the new heart sensor, faster charging and the new audio features. Butch notes the same all-day battery rating and found the Series 12 slightly wider and heavier. If your Series 11 runs fine, keep it.

Which Apple Watches run watchOS 27?

The SE 3, Series 9 and newer, and Ultra 2 and newer. The first-generation Ultra stays on watchOS 26 and gets security updates only. Siri AI also needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone.

Is the Apple Watch Ultra good for sleep tracking?

It’s big for bed. My first-generation Ultra gets in the way some nights and logs my sleep inaccurately. Reviewers say the same about the 12 mm Ultra 4. The 9.7 mm Series 12 is easier to sleep in.

Do I need the cellular model?

Only if you’ll leave your phone behind for runs or errands. It adds $100 on the Series 12 and $50 on the SE 3, plus a monthly carrier fee.

How long does an Apple Watch battery last in 2026?

Apple rates the SE 3 at 18 hours, the Series 12 at 24 and the Ultra 4 at 50. My used first-generation Ultra, rated at 36 hours, needs two top-ups a day at 88% battery health.
