Meta says Horizon OS v2.13 is the final release for Quest 2 and Quest Pro, reaching every headset by March 2027. Quarterly security patches and critical bug fixes continue through the end of 2027, and apps keep working. Quest 3S starts at $349.99.
Meta has stopped building new features for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro. In a November 3 developer post, it says Horizon OS v2.13 is the last OS release for both headsets and reaches every device by March 2027. After that, Meta will ship quarterly security patches and critical bug fixes through the end of 2027.
Nothing stops working on your headset today. If you own one, keep using it, and plan its replacement before 2028 if it holds work accounts or connects to a company network.
What changes, and when
From Meta’s post:
- March 2027. v2.13, the final OS release, and v213, the last supported SDK version, reach all Quest 2 and Quest Pro devices.
- Through the end of 2027. Quarterly security patches and critical bug fixes continue.
- December 2027. The final security patch, and the last month developers can submit new apps for the two headsets.
What stays: people on Quest 2 and Quest Pro can still find, buy, download and play apps, and cross-play with the Quest 3 and Quest 3S remains. Developers can keep shipping updates to existing apps. Meta says it will no longer test new OS and SDK releases against the two headsets, so apps that keep targeting them depend on each developer’s own testing.
The Quest 2 launched in October 2020 and the Quest Pro in 2022. Meta stopped selling both in 2024. Its post points to what comes next: Meta VR Glasses, which it says launch next spring. Engadget, which reported the change, notes both headsets are still used by millions of people.
A Quest 2 is a 2027 device now
For a headset you already own, this is a long runway: 13 more months of security fixes. For a headset you might buy, it changes the math. A used Quest 2 or Quest Pro bought today gets no new features and loses security updates in about a year. The current entry model, the Quest 3S, costs $349.99 for 128GB and $449.99 for 256GB after Meta’s April 19 price increase, which it blamed on memory chip costs. The Quest 3 is $599.99.
If you use a Quest for work, three things to do before 2028:
- Company-managed headsets. Ask IT when it will stop allowing devices that no longer get security patches. December 2027 is the hard date.
- Quest Pro face and eye tracking. Apps you rely on keep working, but new versions may stop supporting the Pro without notice, because Meta no longer tests against it.
- Buying for a team. Skip the Quest 2 and Quest Pro, even at clearance prices, and wait to see what Meta VR Glasses cost next spring.
